SUMMARY:Big Fat Gypsy Myths: Busted
DESCRIPTION:As June is Gypsy\, Roma and Traveller History Month\, join Marie Bowers as she discusses who these communities really are\, and sheds light of some of the issues they face. Marie will also discuss her outreach project ‘Science Travels’ and her doctoral research investigating how Gypsy\, Traveller\, Roma\, Showman and Boater communities (GTRSB) engage with STEMM education. Please note: there will be singing\, a game of ‘Play Your Cards Right’ and some sweary language. \nAbout the speaker\nMarie Bowers is a Romany woman\, a biochemist\, a teaching Technician at the University of Glasgow\, and a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Aberdeen. Marie leads the STEMM Outreach Project ‘Science Travels’ which not only seeks to engage Gypsy\, Traveller\, Roma\, Showman and Boater (GTRSB) communities with STEMM\, but to raise awareness of these communities with non-GTRSB groups. This project has taken Marie to both Westminster and Holyrood to discuss equitable and sustainable STEMM education for all with parliamentarians\, educators and members of learned societies. \nThis is event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \nAccessibility: The Admiral Woods Bar now has a functioning lift which can take wheelchair users (or others who are unable to manage stairs) down to the function room. There is also a disabled toilet in the function room too. To help us accommodate you if you require to use these facilities we recommend you email us in advance: contact@glasgowskeptics.com \n
