SUMMARY:Why is Critical Thinking not encouraged in RE Classes?
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nEvent Description \nIn the mid 1960’s Clare started teaching Biology in a Large comprehensive school in Glasgow and encountered some hostility from staff\, parents and the school chaplain when trying to teach the science that directly contradicted their long-held beliefs. \nThis talk will cover some of those frustrating and occasionally hilarious encounters that were had in those early teaching days. It will also outline the huge amount of evidence\, readily available online\, which would help pupils decide on the true origins of the “myths and legends” which they are being taught as facts\, and the reasons why religions still hold such a powerful influence over many people today. \nWhen recently the Scottish Education system decided to change from the ‘didactic’ method of teaching and\, instead\, encourage pupils to develop their critical thinking skills when studying a subject\, it was though that the’ wind of change’ was about to blow through schools. However\, in some school little has changed about Religious Education for over half a century. \nAbout the speaker\nAfter retiring from teaching\, Clare joined the Humanist Society Scotland and served for several years as their Education Officer\, visiting schools all over Scotland\, and taking part in debates on radio and television. She also commissioned reviews of books for Primary and Secondary pupils which teachers\, parents and pupils had found useful in helping to develop their skill in “Critical thinking”. These were distributed to every school in Scotland together with the offer of a free set of any title which the teacher chose\, earning significant positive feedback.\nAdditional Details:\nThis is event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \n  \nTo view event details on other platforms: \n\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/1551008315316342\nMeetup: https://www.meetup.com/glasgow-skeptics/events/287343868\nEventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/glasgow-skeptics-why-is-critical-thinking-not-encouraged-in-re-classes-tickets-389180979787\n\n  \nAccessibility:\nAs per the policy of the Admiral Bar\, access to the venue “can only be provided to patrons who are sufficiently mobile and capable of independently evacuating premises\, or with the minimum of assistance”.
