SUMMARY:Diamonds: Expensive gems or engineering material of the future?
DESCRIPTION:Are diamonds forever? A woman’s best friend? The rarest and most expensive of gemstones? Or the best material to make a quantum computer with? \nEveryone in the modern world knows of the allure and cost of diamonds\, but what is it really that makes them so special? Are they actually that rare? And are they good for anything other than making expensive\, sparkly jewellery? \nThis talk will discuss why diamond is proving to be one of the most exciting materials for the development of new technologies in the areas of physics\, chemistry\, engineering and biosciences\, and will try to answer: \n\nAre diamonds actually special and what can they do that other materials can’t?\nHow do you grow a real diamond in a lab?\nHow much does a diamond really cost?\nThe future of diamond? Gemstone OR engineering wonder material?\n\nAbout the speaker: \nDr David Moran is a Lecturer and lead of the Nano Electronic Diamond Devices and Systems group at the University of Glasgow. His research interests include “making very small things” aka nanotechnology with new and interesting material systems. \n\nThis is event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \nAccessibility: The talk is on the top floor of the store\, however there is however a lift available for customers to use. More detailed accessibility information can be found here: https://www.disabledgo.com/access-guide/glasgow-city-council/waterstones-3 \n
