SUMMARY:Failure & Redemption: How Science Saves Science
DESCRIPTION:\nView on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/943905072974246\nView on Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/Glasgow-skeptics/events/284661125\nView on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/failure-redemption-how-science-saves-science-tickets-300127478367\n\nIn the pursuit of knowledge\, efforts in science have brought about some of the most disastrous\, shocking\, and even hilarious results. But how do we know!? Because… SCIENCE! \nMegan Crawford\, PhD\, will reprise her role as Resident Scientist Shocker and present how it’s possible that the very system responsible for humanity’s biggest failures\, shockingest shockers\, and cheekiest surprises\, is oddly still the best system for exposing these very conundrums. \nAbout the speaker:\nMegan Crawford is a Lecturer in Data Science and Director of the Futures & Analytics Research (FAR) Hub at Edinburgh Napier University. She earned her PhD at Strathclyde University\, a MSc in Behavioural and Economic Sciences from Warwick University\, and BAs in Cognitive Psychology and Philosophy from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. \nAdditional Details:\nThis is event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \nAccessibility:\nAs per the policy of the Admiral Bar\, access to the venue “can only be provided to patrons who are sufficiently mobile and capable of independently evacuating premises\, or with the minimum of assistance”. Unfortunately\, this leaves the basement inaccessible to most wheelchair users \nCovid-19 Safety Guidelines: \n\nThe Admiral Bar staff will be taking contact details of attendees for track & trace if required.\nWe would encourage only those who are fully vaccinated to attend (or those with valid medical exemption).\nWe would also encourage taking a lateral flow test before attending.\nMask wearing is mandatory until you are seated\, at which point they can be removed if desired (although we would encourage you to remain masked if possible).\nHand sanitizer and spare masks will be made available as you enter\, although we would prefer if you brought your own mask at least.\nAudience size has been limited to 60 in order to allow for acceptable distancing.\nSeating will be spaced out as best as possible\, and the Glasgow Skeptics team will be at hand to help rearrange as required depending on group size.\nThe Glasgow Skeptics team will wear masks at all times\, except the MC for the night\, who will remove their mask for doing the introductions\, managing the Q&A etc.\nThe speaker will also wear a mask when not on stage\n\n
