SUMMARY:Glasgow Skeptics Visit Cafe Scientifique: Plasticising the Planet
DESCRIPTION:So we don’t have an official Glasgow Skeptics event on this date … but our friends over in Cafe Scientifique have got something to tickle your fancy instead. \nThis month’s topic: Plasticising the Planet \nPlastics are an inextricable part of everyday life\, however\, there is growing concern of their impacts\nto the environment. It is estimated that 8 million tons of plastics enter our oceans annually. How\ndoes this plastic get into the ocean? Where does it go? What are microplastics? And what effect\nmight plastics have on marine life and ultimately human health? \nAbout the Speaker:\nWinnie Courtene-Jones is a PhD student at the Scottish Association for Marine Science\, Oban\, where\nshe researches microplastic pollution in the deep sea ecosystem. Winnie has a passion for\ncommunicating science in diverse ways. In 2017 she was awarded the P1 Foundation ‘National\nStudent of the Year’ for her research into microplastics. \n\nFor more information about Café Scientifique: \n\nVisit their website: http://www.gla.ac.uk/events/cafescientifique/\n\nThe talk is free – although they do ask for donations.\nAccessibility information for the venue can be found here: https://www.disabledgo.com/access-guide/glasgow-city-council/waterstones-3\n\n
