SUMMARY:Identity: Faith and Belief in 21st Century Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Doors open at 7.15\, and kickoff is at 7.30 \n\nIn July 2017 the Scottish Social Attitudes Survey found that 58% of people in Scotland identified as “non-religious”\, up from 40% in 1999. But does this mean that most Scots are atheists? How many of us have a decided commitment to secular life philosophies like Humanism? Do non-religious people still hold spiritual beliefs\, and how common are they?\nThis talk will grapple with the facts about belief in Scotland\, and what they say about the Scottish identity\, using data fresh off the press from the Beliefs in Scotland 2018 report by the Humanist Society Scotland. \nAbout the speaker:\nFraser Sutherland is the Campaigns and Communications manager at The Humanist Society Scotland. Previously he has worked at Citizens Advice Scotland and the Scottish Parliament. He has run campaigns on ending Funeral Poverty\, clamping down on payday lenders and protecting vulnerable people from scammers. \n\nThis is event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \n\nAccessibility: As per the policy of the Admiral Bar\, access to the venue “can only be provided to patrons who are sufficiently mobile and capable of independently evacuating premises\, or with the minimum of assistance”. Unfortunately\, this leaves the basement inaccessible to most wheelchair users. \n
