SUMMARY:Paranormal Beliefs in Everyday Lives
DESCRIPTION:Kickoff at 7pm sharp. Top floor of the store. \n\nTesting paranormal claims has been a favorite pastime for skeptics for quite some time now. What to do when this claim is tied to a particular religion? How do experiments differ when testing a claim of the paranormal and testing a religious claim? How should we as skeptics approach believers in either to start a productive conversation and open an effective channel of communication which can lead believers to examine their beliefs? \nAbout the speaker:\nClaire Klingenberg has a background in law and psychology\, and is currently working on her degree in Religious Studies. She has been involved in the skeptic movement since 2013 as co-organizer of the Czech Paranormal Challenge. Since then\, she has consulted on various projects\, where woo & belief meets science. Claire has spoken at multiple science & skepticism conferences and events. She also organized the European Skeptics Congress 2017\, and both years of the Czech March for Science. \nHer current activities include chairing the European Council of Skeptical Organisations\, running the “”Don’t Be Fooled”” project\, which provides free critical thinking seminars to interested high schools\, contributing to the Czech Religious Studies journal Dingir\, as well as to their online news in religion website. In her free time\, Claire visits various religious movements to understand better what draws people to certain beliefs.\nShe lives in Prague\, Czech Republic\, with her partner\, and dog. \n\nThis is event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \n\nAccessibility: The talk is on the top floor of the store\, however there is however a lift available for customers to use.
