SUMMARY:The Search For Life On Mars
DESCRIPTION:The search for life on Mars is an ongoing scientific quest that has captured the imagination of generations. From the earliest observations to modern robotic exploration\, the search has been filled with wild speculation and triumphs of technology. This talk will follow some of the significant events in this search and investigate if we are closer today to answering the question “Is there life on Mars?”. \n\nView event on Facebook\nView event on Meetup\n\nAbout the speaker:\nDr Alastair Tait is Commonwealth Rutherford Fellow at the University of Stirling. Originally from Australia\, Alastair is a published astrobiologist and meteoriticist\, whose current research is investigating meteorite weathering on Mars. Alastair has conducted several meteorite recovery expeditions in remote regions of Australia and is a former NASA – Lunar Planetary Institute intern\, and science team collaborator with the Athena instrument team for the NASA Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Opportunity. Alastair’s research and expeditions have been featured on Radio National\, Australia\, as well as the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) science education program Catalyst. \n\nDrop-in event. No ticket required\, just show up!\nDoors at 7.15\, kickoff at 7.30\nThis is event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \n\nAccessibility: As per the policy of the Admiral Bar\, access to the venue “can only be provided to patrons who are sufficiently mobile and capable of independently evacuating premises\, or with the minimum of assistance”. Unfortunately\, this leaves the basement inaccessible to most wheelchair users. \n
