SUMMARY:The Emperor’s New God: Religious recruitment and the need for Secularism
DESCRIPTION:Stemming from a time when religion was deemed to be good for all\, the influence of the church is soaked into British society and politics. Compulsory Christianity in schools; church access to national and local government; exemption from tax and equality legislation; assumed stewardship of civic events…the list goes on. With reference to the campaigns of Edinburgh Secular Society Neil will explore the psychology and sense of entitlement behind these now demographically unrepresentative privileges. \nAbout the speaker\nNeil Barber is a songwriter\, music tutor and a graduate in philosophy from Edinburgh University. He is The Communications Officer for Edinburgh Secular Society and sometimes represents The National Secular Society as a spokesperson for Scotland. He contributes regularly to debates in the press\, radio and TV and represented the NSS in the Scottish Government’s consultation over the controversial hate crime bill. \nThis is event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \n  \nAccessibility: The Admiral Woods Bar now has a functioning lift which can take wheelchair users (or others who are unable to manage stairs) down to the function room. There is also a disabled toilet in the function room too. To help us accommodate you if you require to use these facilities we recommend you email us in advance: contact@glasgowskeptics.com \n
