SUMMARY:The Forecast Calls For More Models
DESCRIPTION:Description:\nDirect measurement of global temperatures shows unambiguous warming over the industrial era\, but where will they go next\, and what will the consequences be? One way to assess possible futures is with numerical models: Taking systems of known equations governing the physics of the land\, sea\, and air\, and using computers to solve them for different input conditions. But not every possible input parameter is known precisely\, and much of the future will be determined by changes in public policy. To understand how scientists think about the climate future\, we will look at how models are constructed\, what sorts of questions go into them\, and what different types of models exist\, from the large scale Earth Systems Models to the more compact Reduced Complexity Climate Models and Climate Emulators. Different models can be used for different questions\, so the forecast will always call for more models! \nAbout the speaker:\nTrevor is a numerical modeller working on improving reduce complexity climate models at the Centre for Environmental Policy within Imperial College. He previously studied the marine ecosystems in the rapidly changing Arctic seas. He did his PhD in Glasgow (which is one of his favourite cities) and now resides in London (which is not). Outside of science he also love philosophy and Dr Who\, both of which may be referenced in his talk (he offers no apologies for this). \nThis event is free to attend\, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate\, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs\, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield. \nAccessibility: The Admiral Woods Bar now has a functioning lift which can take wheelchair users (or others who are unable to manage stairs) down to the function room. There is also a disabled toilet in the function room too. To help us accommodate you if you require to use these facilities we recommend you email us in advance: contact@glasgowskeptics.com \n
