So we don’t have an official Glasgow Skeptics event on this date … but our friends over in Cafe Scientifique have got something to tickle your fancy instead.

The topic this month: Pumping Scottish Lochs for Renewable Energy

Working to get more Renewables into the UK’s electricity system is very important. Since 2014, we have expanded into the development of sites for Pumped Storage Hydro generation. Mark will explain pumped storage and how this is a source of large stores of energy. He will discuss the advantages of this approach: The nature of pumped storage means it can act as both a generator and a store of energy (the latter is particularly relevant when it comes to helping wind farms). It responds very quickly, therefore can be powered up and down in a matter of seconds which allows it to help address sudden spikes in demand or drops in supply. With a life of at least 50 years and perhaps over 100, it is considered as much more sustainable than other forms of storage. Once built the projects will also offset millions of tons of CO2 emissions per year.

About the speaker:
Mark Wilson is CEO of Intelligent Land Investments Group and has been working on Renewable Energy for the last 10 years.
