August 20 @ 7:15 pm - 9:00 pm
Event Navigation
Often portrayed as the most deceptive and most disliked of the mathematical sciences, statistics gets a tough deal. It’s no surprise then that statistics is interwoven throughout all things morbid, including disease, conflict, and death.
In this talk Liam will review some statistical fallacies through grim tales from history and show how they’re more relevant than ever before. Liam will also discuss the challenge of public perceptions of statistics and demo some techniques he uses to help people cast a more critical eye over the swathes of numbers we now meet in everyday life.
Dr Liam Brierley is a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow who uses epidemiology and biostatistics to investigate infectious diseases. Liam is also a media Ambassador for the Royal Statistical Society and has worked with national press including The Guardian and BBC’s Panorama to make sense of health data. He is a keen science communicator and has performed at various science festivals as well as the Edinburgh Fringe.
This is event is free to attend, although we will be asking for donations at the end of the talk. Participants are under no obligation whatsoever to donate, however please rest assured that the money we collect doesn’t end up in anyone’s pocket – it is used to fund our overhead costs, and travel/accommodation for our speakers who come from further afield.
